Apple VP Greg Joswiak is at the Code/Mobile conference today, and has given additional insight into the buggy release of iOS 8.0.1. Joswiak apologized for the situation, and said that it was not the update itself that cause the issues, according to Re/code:
"It wasn't the software itself it was the way it was distributed" Joswiak on iOS 8.0.1 "We're very sorry"
The 8.0.1 update disabled Touch ID and cellular reception for a number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users. Apple corrected the issues a few days later with the release of iOS 8.0.2.
