How to mute the ringer and alerts on your Apple Watch

For when pings or rings would be inappropriate or embarrassing, the Apple Watch lets you mute your notifications and alerts.

Maybe you're going into a movie theater or about to watch a play. Maybe you're at dinner with a date or just want to take a quick nap. Whatever the reason, being about to quickly and easily mute the ringer and alerts on your Apple Watch can come in really handy. And there are several ways to do just that!

Before using Mute, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Mute is different than Do Not Disturb in that it only silences sound, it doesn't stop haptics from tapping you. Think of it like the hardware mute switch on your iPhone.

  2. Mute will not silence alarms or timers. That's to make sure you don't miss anything truly important. If you really want to make sure no sound comes from your Apple Watch at all, turn off any alarms and stop any timers as well.

  3. If you forgot to put your Apple Watch into Mute and it starts making noise when you'd rather it didn't, take your hand and cover the front of your watch. That will instantly silence rings and alerts. (Just make sure Cover to Mute is enabled in the Apple Watch app for iPhone Settings.)

How to mute your Apple Watch on the Apple Watch

  1. Press the Digital Crown until you see the watch face.
  2. Swipe up to reveal the Settings Glance. (if you get a different glance just swipe left until you get to Settings.)
  3. Tap the Mute button.

To un-mute, repeat the steps above. You can also Mute by launching the Settings app, tapping Sound & Haptics, and toggling Mute to on, but the glance is faster.
