Pioneer's AVH-4100NEX CarPlay head unit now shipping for $700

Dumb car stereos are about to truly get smart as the automotive solutions from Apple (and Google) hit the market.

The long wait for the first aftermarket head units that run CarPlay — and Android Auto — is finally over. Pioneer is shipping its entry-level AVH-4100NEX unit for around $700.

That gets you a 7-inch touchscreen that's compatible with all iPhone 6 and iPhone 5 models, as well as Android 5.x devices — currently on a whopping 3 percent of all active devices. And you don't have to choose one or the other, it's just a matter of plugging in your phone. The best of both world, really. Once you do that, your phone's actually controlling the interface, but you're interacting entirely with the head unit's display.

The 4100NEX has a resistive display, which sounds downright ancient but still is pretty common when it comes to car infotainment. The 4100 also the most affordable of Pioneer's trio (the 7100 and 8100 are $1,200 and $1,400, respectively).

We took a look at what's what back at CES.

We're also awaiting aftermarket products from Panasonic and Kenwood.
