IDC has released the numbers for shipments by vendor for Q4 2014. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Xiaomi is on top with a 13.7 percent market share in the fourth quarter — up from 6.5 percent over the previous year. Perhaps more interesting, however, is that it looks like Apple's launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus helped it jump up to the number two spot in the fourth quarter, with a 12.3 percent market share — up from 5 percent just the quarter prior.
While Apple managed to grow its market share by a significant amount in just one quarter, other manufacturers weren't so lucky. Year-over-year, Samsung's market share dropped by 49.9 percent, while Lenovo was also down by a more modest 14.3 percentage points.
On the Chinese market as a whole, IDC notes that 107.5 million smartphones were shipped to the country in the fourth quarter of 2014. Overall, 2014 saw 420.7 million smartphones shipped to China.
It's clear that the smartphone market in China is booming, and it's definitely interesting to see Apple starting to take a larger slice of the pie, even as Chinese manufacturers of lower-priced Android handsets continue to prosper.
