Google Play Books updated for the iPhone and iPad with new Material Design look

Google Play Books for the iPhone and iPad is the subject of a major update that's now available for download. The update boosts its version number up to 2.0 and adds a number of new features, along with a user interface refresh that brings the Material Design themes of Android 5.0 Lollipop to the app.

Here's what's new and improved in today's update:

  • A beautiful new look and feel
  • See the books you've read most recently in Read Now
  • Books in your library are categorized and sortable
  • Upload and read your own PDF and EPUB files
  • Access free samples from the personalized recommendations in Read Now or through search
  • Double-tap on any page to zoom
  • Opening a book for the first time is much faster

The update does bring Google Play Books closer to iBooks in terms of features for iOS device owners, especially the ability for users to upload and read PDF and EPUB files from within the app.
